Foam Facts

At the Foam Outlet we use the same nomenclature and terminology used across the industry, for you to get a full understanding of what we have to offer. When it comes to foam, we could go on for days! However, what it all comes down to are two key factors, density and Indentation Load Deflection (firmness). These two factors are not related. For example, you can have a high-density foam that is very soft and low-density foam that is very firm.

Density of foam is the weight of foam. The denser foam is, the longer it lasts. That’s why mom and dad’s furniture lasted so long. Because the foam was dense not because it was hard. Most manufacturers use a 1.8lb density whereas we use a 2.5lb. This is why we give a lifetime guarantee on our couch cushions.

Indentation Load Deflection (ILD) is the firmness of the foam. Most manufacturers use 25ILD. We offer 35ILD, 45ILD and 65ILD.

Our foam is a third heavier and starts at a third firmer than what manufacturers use.

Foam lasts longer if it denser, NOT if it is firmer.
